Chapter 22

“Your highness!” My great aunt called out.

A hand grabbed at mine but I jerked away.

My canines sharpened and a fire lit inside my chest.

Lettie walked down the stairs, rubbing at her eyes, pulling a heavy sweater shawl around her shoulders.

“Lettie!” Someone shouted as a warning.

She turned, confused. Until her eyes landed on me. Then it was like a deer in headlights.

Her eyes widened, her feet began moving backwards. My hand ripped my knife out and I threw it as a warning into the tree next to her head. The blade sunk into the bark, landed with a thunk, shocking her. She stumbled over a rock and fell to the ground. A roar erupted from my mouth as my hands shot forward and picked up Lettie, throwing her against the side of the trailer home. The harsh bang of her body meeting metal rocked through the air and I felt the rise of fear come around me from the other Lothrees.

I pushed my energy up against Lettie, pinning her body against the wall, and closing the distance between us. Pierce came up behind me, and then Alex. They were smart and did not try to stop me.

As I leaned my face close to hers, baring my teeth and feeling the fire of fury burn through my veins, she whimpered in fear.

“Please!” She croaked, her pitch high.

I pushed harder and her eyes pinched in pain.

“You deserve to die!” I bellowed, pulling my hands back a fraction of an inch to release some energy and then shoving them forward again. Her head banged against the metal surface.

“Should we stop her?” Kyson asked behind me.

There was a pause before Pierce answered, “None of us were conscious to see what Jade endured. So we cannot reason with her on what is and is not appropriate at this moment.”

Their words and the reminder of what happened in the basement of the train station only stoked the fire in my body, pulling tears to my eyes and a rage into my mind. I pulled my hands back close to my chest and then threw them forward again, bashing Lettie’s body against the trailer before dropping my energy from her.

She shrieked in pain and slumped to the ground, her head hanging low.

“What are you doing?!” The bald man cried out.

I snarled at him in response and he stopped walking towards me.

Merrick walked up but did not reach out to stop nor comfort me. “Lettie is guilty of crimes against the Empress and her Victri. The Empress is within her right to end her life if so desired.”

“What?!” A woman gasped. “Letecia? But...I thought she was supposed to be the next empress? We thought she was, I mean, with her mother gone…”

I roared in rage again, my hands balling into fists at the mention of Nara. Lettie jerked, lifting her head and holding up a hand. “Wait, please Jade. I-”

I stepped forward and slapped her hard against the cheek, repaying her for the hit she had given me.

Her head jerked but she spoke again.
